Ballston Spa, NY— Horse lovers everywhere, join us for the 23rd Annual Saratoga Horse Symposium on Saturday, April 12th and Sunday, April 13th at the Saratoga County 4-H Training Center, 556 Middle Line Road, Ballston Spa, NY. This is event is open to the public, all are welcome!
The Saratoga Horse Symposium, hosted by CCE Equine–a division of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, is a two day celebration of the horse for new, aspiring and experienced horse owners and enthusiasts. The horse symposium features educational presentations, live horse demonstrations and riding clinics. Our classes are taught by leading veterinarians, trainers and researchers from across the state. This is the only event where attendees will have the chance to see these experts together one venue.

SATURDAY
9:00am “Equine Wound Care” …Carlin Jones, VMD, Equine Clinic at Oakencroft – The horse’s body has an amazing innate ability to heal; learn how to maximize that ability. We will cover what to do when you first see a wound, which wounds are red alert situations, how wounds heal, and how vital your role is in the healing process.
10:15 am “Snorts, Stomps, and Squeals”…Dr. Karin D. Bump, Cazenovia College – A look at the comparisons and contrasts between domestic and feral horse behavior as a way to consider approaches to modifying housing and handling environments to improve equine health
and welfare.
10:15am “Saddle Fitting”…Kate Wilson, Dutchess Bridle & Saddle, LLC. – Lecture and saddle fitting.
11:30am “Planning for Life-Time Care for Horses” …Dr. Karin D. Bump, Cazenovia College – A discussion session focusing on the realities horse owners need to be prepared to face in order to provide – and pay for – a life time of care for their horses.
1:30pm “Overcoming Anxiety in your Horse”… Kelly Sanford, Kelly Sanford Horsemanship – What happens when your horse is anxious? Do you become anxious? Do you resort to begging or do you become angry, or do you just give up? This groundwork clinic will demonstrate techniques that will help to calm you both and get you into a relaxed, working frame of mind.
3:00pm “The Mechanics of Speed” ….Tina Krieger – Exercises to help improve your horse’s agility in barrel racing and games. Proper turning and correct placement to improve speed and performance in your horse through patterns. Things a rider can do to help their horse so they are happy at the job they are doing.
SUNDAY
9:00am “Poor Performance in the Equine Athlete” …Brett Woodie DVM,MS,DACVS and Travis Tull DVM,DACVS – Regardless of vocation, equine athletes can experience poor performance. How do you address a problem that could originate could originate from several or multiple body systems? This discussion will focus on the diagnosis, causes, and treatments of common problems originating in the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems that limit the potential of the equine athlete.
9:00am “Equine Massage”… Karry Brothers of EquiMotion – Find out why understanding how your horse’s skeleton and muscles work together can improve how you and your horse work as a team.
10:15am “Managing Parasites” …Linda D. Mittel, MSPH, DVM, Senior Ext Associate, Animal Health Diagnostic Center, Cornell University – discussion on deworming products, fecal examinations, resistance in parasites, and parasites in the horse. She will discuss how we can use these to help make the decision on when to deworm your horse, if necessary, and prevent parasite resistance. Guidelines will be discussed on pasture management to aide in parasite control also.
12:00pm “A Second Career for NY Bred OTTB’s” …. Presented by the New York Thoroughbred Breeding & Development Fund – The Western New York polo club will demonstrate how they are giving former racehorses a second career with dignity. Attendees will learn about working with and retraining the Thoroughbred Racehorse. Thoroughbreds have a great work ethic, are quick learners and great athletes. Speakers are: Tracy Egan, Rob Donnan, and Terry Mehlenbacher.
1:30pm “Introduction to Ranch Horse Showing” …Hudson Valley Ranch Horse Association (HVRHA) – Horses are a big part of our Upstate NY world. Ranch Horse Showing is becoming a more and more popular way for horse owners to get together, have some laughs and friendly competition. This seminar will give you an overview to some of the classes offered in our Hudson Valley Ranch Horse Association Shows. – Members of the HVRHA will demonstrate some of the classes offered at Ranch Horse shows including Ranch Riding, Ranch Reining, and Ranch Horse Cattle Cutting.
In addition to the Symposium’s daily events, there will be a Silent Auction offering a great selection of goods and services donated by many local businesses. All proceeds from this annual fundraiser directly benefit educational Equine Programming and the 4-H Training Center. Donations for the Silent Auction are still being accepted.
Doors will open at 8:00am for registration; classes will begin each day at 9:00am. Pre-registration is $20/day for adults and $10.00/day for college students and $5/for 4-H youth. Please bring your 4-H enrollment card or college ID.
